My Approach to Infant Feeding

Sarah Lane Johnson,
M.S. CCC-SLP, IBCLC
While working as a pediatric Speech Language Pathologist, I fell in love with supporting families as they navigate feeding challenges. My interest in pediatric feeding therapy grew immensely with the birth of my son. Even as a feeding therapist, I experienced significant difficulty breastfeeding my baby and was desperate for comprehensive lactation and feeding expertise.
I set out on a journey to do just that- become a duel certified Speech Language Pathologist and Lactation Consultant. I completed Lactation Training through UNC-Chapel Hill's Mary Rose Tully Training Initiative.
I also expanded my knowledge about solid food introduction and am a baby led weaning expert. I was a member of the Solid Starts professional directory. I have also taken the Adapted Baby Led Weaning training for babies with pediatric feeding disorders.
I have experience providing feeding therapy to medically complex infants including premature infants, those with congenital heart defects, down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and those with cleft lip and/or palate.

I utilize evidenced based treatment in order to ensure each family is receiving the most effective care. I value family centered care and collaboration with other professionals (OTs, PTs, ENTs, dentists, pediatricians, nutritionists, and other SLPs/IBCLCs).

I understand the magnitude of the postpartum period and when feeding your baby is stressful, your whole family's life is impacted. I desire for families to leave my consultations feeling less alone and more confident in reaching their lactation and feeding goals.
